Vaccination likely to prevent transmission of Corona

About 150 million people around the world have already been vaccinated against the coronavirus in recent weeks, “so there is now a very large body of experience,” says Markus Müller, rector of the Medical University of Vienna. Ursula Wiedermann-Schmidt, chairwoman of the national vaccination committee, is particularly pleased with new data on the vaccines. Because for all three vaccines that have been approved in Europe so far, these data show: the viral load is significantly reduced by vaccination. “So we can now say not only that everyone can be individually protected from severe disease by vaccination, but also that you are highly unlikely to infect others.”

Immunization as quickly as possible
Skepticism about the vaccine from Astra Zeneca is clearly noticeable at the moment, and there are even reservations among medical personnel. However, Wiedermann-Schmidt and infectiologist and vaccine specialist Herwig Kollaritsch want to dispel these. At the moment, a comparison of the three vaccines is “not permissible at all,” says Wiedermann-Schmidt. This is because the respective studies draw their findings from different populations and measurement parameters. Because of these differences, she says, a direct comparison is not possible. “But we know that all three offer extremely high protection against serious illness, hospitalizations and deaths. And that’s what matters,” she stresses.

Kollaritsch also warns, “If you forgo vaccination now because you think the vaccine is less good, it means a delay in the vaccination schedule of up to four months. It’s important that we take advantage of the time factor now and immunize as soon as possible. Because as we’ve heard, vaccination can not only protect individuals, but it appears to affect the circulation of the virus in the population.”
